Week 7: Neuroscience and Art

We learned this week about the emphasis in neuroscience on studying the brain. Neuroscience is described as “science that deals with the structure or fution of the nervous system and brain.” Specifically scientists have focused on the consciousness of the brain. Aristotle was the first one to look at the brain critically – he divided it into three sections. As we have learned throughout this course, there have been massive technological advancements that have played a major role in both art and science.

Freud also is one who thought critically about the brain. He divided it into consciousness and unconsciousness. Each form of consciousness is viewed as an art form. A man named Noah Hutton described the intersection between neuroscience and art in three ways, how art is perceived by the brain, how art conceives the brain, and the way in which artistic processes mirror cognitive processes. Giovanni Frazzetto and Suzanne Anker collectively wrote an article called “Neuroculture.” Neuroscience continues to fascinates artists because the brain is a very mysterious organ. It is amazing that us humans can dream, lucid dream, and hallucinate. As Professor Vesna stated, 95% of our dreams are lost. The human brain is capable of so many things that are impossible to comprehend. This is a major reason the brain is so fascinating to artists as well as scientists.

One artist that I found that works with the fusion of neuroscience and art is Greg Dunn. His paintings are very beautiful and they look like nerves from the brain or nervous system, but they are drawn as trees or other objects.

  1. Nice post Megan. I like how you used Freud as your example for describing consciousness and unconsciousness. I also like your examples of Greg Dunn and his examples.
